Bob Gordon has broken the Curse of the 38th.
Since the Bergen County-based legislative district was created, every State Senator has eventually failed to win re-election to a seat that has been competitive for 45 years.
Republican Fred Wendel lost re-election to Democrat John Skevin in 1973. Skevin was ousted by Republican John Paolella in 1981, and Paolella was unseated by Democrat Paul Contillo in 1983. In 1991, Republican Louis Kosco beat Contillo; Kosco spent a decade in the Senate before Democrat Joseph Coniglio defeated him in 2001. Coniglio dropped out of his 2007 re-election campaign after it was leaked to the press that he was the target of a federal corruption probe. For a while, it looked like Republicans might take that seat, but Bob Gordon won in 2007 and held his seat against aggressive challenges in 2011, 2013 and 2017.
Gordon’s resignation to join the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities officially ends the curse.
